Community Guidelines

Veil gives you a mask — but not a shield for cruelty. Anonymity on this platform is a privilege designed to encourage honesty, not to enable harm. These guidelines define what that means in practice.

What Will Get You Banned

✗ Hate speech, slurs, or content targeting religion, caste, gender, or sexuality

✗ Attempting to identify, doxx, or expose another user's real identity

✗ Sending unsolicited sexual or explicit content

✗ Harassment, threats, or intimidation of any kind

✗ Coordinating academic dishonesty, cheating, or sharing exam papers

✗ Distributing or soliciting controlled substances

✗ Sharing non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII)

✗ Impersonating faculty, staff, or other students

1. Respect Anonymity — Yours and Theirs

The entire system of Veil depends on mutual respect for anonymity. You may not attempt to identify, expose, or reveal the real identity of another user without their explicit, in-app consent through the Reveal system. This includes sharing screenshots of conversations with the intent to identify users, attempting to cross-reference profile information with real-world identities, or pressuring users into revealing personal information.

Violations of this rule are treated as the most serious category of offense and will result in immediate permanent suspension.

2. Zero Tolerance for Harassment & Hate Speech

Veil has a strict zero-tolerance policy for targeted harassment and hate speech. This includes but is not limited to: threats of physical harm, gender-based abuse, casteist slurs, communal targeting, content that sexualizes minors, and persistent unsolicited contact after a user has indicated they do not wish to engage.

We do not issue warnings for severe violations. A single verified report of targeted harassment, hate speech, or threats will result in a permanent hardware-level ban with no appeal.

3. Sexual Content & Minors

Explicit sexual content must never be sent to a user without their prior, unambiguous consent. While Veil does not proactively scan message content, users can report violations at any time. Any content involving the sexualisation of minors will result in immediate account termination and reporting to law enforcement authorities.

4. Academic Integrity

Veil must not be used to facilitate cheating, share examination papers, or coordinate academic dishonesty in any form. IIT Kanpur's Academic Integrity Policy applies to all students; conduct on Veil that violates it may be reported to the Institute's academic bodies in cases involving serious breaches.

5. Enforcement & Reporting

You can report a message or user directly within the app. Reports are reviewed manually. Penalties range from a warning (for minor, first-time infractions) to a permanent ban. The severity of the action is determined by the nature of the violation, frequency, and any evidence provided.

6. Legal Disclosure

⚠️ Important Safety Notice

While Veil is deeply committed to protecting user anonymity, it is not an unconditional guarantee. In the following circumstances, we may be legally required or ethically obligated to disclose user information:

! A valid court order, subpoena, or warrant issued by a competent judicial authority in India.

! A credible, imminent threat of physical harm to a named individual.

! Discovery of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM), which will be reported immediately.

We will always minimise the scope of any disclosure to the specific data required and will notify affected users if legally permitted to do so.
